Employment With Us

Many people ask us about employment in Japan. While many language schools and ALT companies require no qualifications from their teaching staff, we operate under the Australian standards, therefore can only hire highly qualified and competent ELICOS trainers.

As we expand in Japan, we must guarantee the highest quality and performance from training staff, and following and abiding by the Australian standards guarantees to our clients a minimum standard is in place.

Many people ask what does ELICOS mean. The letters in the word 'ELICOS' stand for the first letters of Australia's 'English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students'. Most international students in Australia have probably attended English language training at their Australian university, a TAFE, or a registered training organisation.

ELICOS programs have been designed for students who require English language training before commencing formal studies in Australia. There are other English language programs that a student can do, but the Australian government has an official ELICOS student visa especially for students who do one of these courses.

In Australia, there are approximately 300 colleges that are registered to deliver courses to international students within the English language, or ELICOS, sector. Over a 100 of these are members of English Australia.

Employment eligibility and conditions for teachers and certain other English language college staff are well defined and regulated by the federal government through the Department of Education. Specifically, the ELICOS Standards 2018 set out that ELICOS teachers must:

1. have a degree or diploma of at least three years full-time or equivalent (teaching or other);

2. have a suitable TESOL qualification or qualification that contains TESOL as a method, such as the 10688NAT or 10695NAT:

10688NAT: https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/10688NAT
10695NAT: https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/10695NAT

3. have appropriate TESOL teaching experience or be formally mentored by a senior staff member with this experience. This can include a practical workplace experience.

As well as the above, senior academic leadership staff must hold a suitable postgraduate TESOL qualification, and appropriate educational management and TESOL teaching experience or equivalent. They must also maintain up-to-date knowledge of significant developments in TESOL theory and practice.

If you have an overseas qualification and intend to apply to be a trainer-assessor, you will also need the TAE40116:  https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/TAE40116

All Japanese citizens who complete the 10688NAT Diploma in TESOL and TAE40116 are guaranteed employment at one of our schools in Japan.

We also employ native English speakers with the 10688NAT and who have completed degrees (bachelor/ master) in computer science, linguistics, teaching and learning.
